One Direction MANIA: Harry Styles throws himself into the historic moment as he performs on the Today Show at Rockefeller Plaza, New York on Tuesday It was One Direction mania on Tuesday as the quintet celebrated the release of their album Take Me Home with an unforgettable performance on the Today show in New York. Over 15,000 screaming fans greeted the X Factor's most successful product in Rockefeller Plaza; many of the dedicated fans had camped out for as long as five days in the freezing cold and rain.
They came, they saw, they conquered: One Direction - Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson, Zayn Malik and Liam Payne - drew record crowds to the Today show after fans camped out for as long as five days But they didn't need warming up when they finally got a glimpse of Harry, Liam, Niall, Zayn and Louis. It has to rank with the epoch-defining moment those other British sons - The Beatles - appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show in 1964 (back then, many dismissed them as a sugary pop band too and 1-D have written five songs on their new album). The assembled throng was bigger than any crowd in the show's history, according to co-host Al Roker.
Overawed: Harry thanked the fans for their show of support in a city that's been so affected by Superstorm Sandy The boys, who hail predominantly from northern England, started the performance with best known hit What Makes You Beautiful before making a special announcement during a chat with Matt Lauer and Savannah Guthrie. 'We are going to do our first-ever movie and it's going to be in 3-D and it's coming to cinemas near you on the 30th of August, 2013,' Naill Horan told the rapturous crowd.
Lucky few: With 15,000 clamouring for a look, it was the privileged elite who actually got close to their idols The boys then thanked the crowd for coming out despite the difficulties the New York area has recently faced in the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy. 'I think for us it's unbelievable to see the fans support,' Harry said. 'I think in spite of everything that happened, our thoughts and prayers are with everyone that's been affected by Hurricane Sandy and to see everyone come out still when everything's happened is absolutely amazing, it means so much to us.'
Causing a storm: Zayn and Liam sang their hearts out for the huge crowd
Camped out: One Direction fans have been camped outside Rockefeller Plaza in New York for five days to catch a glimpse of the band who are due to appear on the Today Show on Tuesday 'We were a little nervous when we first put the album for the fans,' Zayn Malik said of the album release. "But we we've been waiting so long, we are just excited and we are happy the fans can get a physical copy now.' One Direction fans are amongst the most terrifyingly loyal in the world. The 'One Directioners' were even guaranteed a glimpse of their heroes - but that hasn't deterred them for a second.
Dedication: The fans have literally taken over the Rockefeller Plaza and the pavements are swarmed with tent, deckchairs, blankets and posters. Some have signs boasting they have been camping for 115 hours
Come prepared: Despite the long hours and boredom the fans are cheerful and happily pose for photographs wrapped in fleeces and wearing comfy warm clothes
